Periodic investigations of waste from households and commerce in Berlin, by analysis of material categories and relevant physico-chemical parameters, generates a sound data and information base for strategic and planning tasks of the public waste management company Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe A. ö. R. (BSR). Waste analyses for determining material composition and physico-chemical properties require high methodical standard procedures for sampling and analysis. The multi-stage, stratified random sampling design for waste analyses, developed by ARGUS, delivers high quality results for updating of relevant waste indicators. The waste analysis in Berlin 2008 demonstrates the status quo and the development of waste properties and enables recommendations for waste management strategies based on the potential of the waste material and the structure of the waste origin. Trends since 1997 have shown that the amounts of household waste and commercial waste could be reduced by 0.3 % and 5 % per annum respectively. It could also be shown, that household and commercial waste include about 40 % of dry recyclable materials which could, at least partly, be recovered.
